JOSEPH UCHITEL

The Company's founder and Artistic Director, Joseph Uchitel was educated in the former Soviet Union and spent 10 years as a director in New York before moving to Australia in 1990 to teach and direct. Joseph brings with him a wealth of experience, critical acclaim and commercial success, and has directed for and at many of Sydney's theatre venues: Ensemble Theatre, Marion Street Theatre, Look Out Theatre, Sydney Theatre Company's Wharf 2, The Rep in Newtown and the Stables Theatre. He worked as a director for the Australian National Playwrights' Conference in 1993 and 2002.

Joseph was nominated for the Sydney Theatre Critic's Award for the production of The Deal at the Ensemble Theatre. His television version of the play Persephone won first prize, the Gold Award for the Best Independent Video Production at the 4th Annual WorldFest - Charleston International Film Festival in the United States. The stage version of Persephone, also directed by Joseph, was first produced at the Stables Theatre. For East Coast Theatre Company Joseph Uchitel directed a one person show of Euripidis' Medea, Miranda by Stephen Sewell and Love Fix, an evening of two one act plays: Prelude and Liebestod by an acclaimed American playwright Terrence McNally and Aria di Mezzo Carattere by Tim Benzie, Mother and Child by Jon Fosse and most recently the Australian Premiere of Empress of China by Ruth Wolff.
