Born in Sydney in 1953, Stephen Sewell is one of the country's most prominent and controversial writers. He is best known for his theatre pieces, which have been produced by major theatre companies throughout Australia. These include Traitors, The Father We Loved on a Beach by the Sea, Dreams in an Empty City, Welcome the Bright World, The Garden of Granddaughters and The Blind Giant is Dancing. Sewell's Golgrutha Trilogy opened to acclaim in Adelaide and Nil, Cat & Buried has played in Melbourne. As well, Sewell has been extremely active in the film industry. Credits include The Long Way Home (winner of a 1986 AFI Award), Isabelle Eberhardt, and the psychological thriller Savage Heart. Sewell is creating a new play of epic proportions, written specifically for the East Coast Theatre Company. Entitled Russian Egg Flip, it has been described by the author as "a crazed drama about Russian cooking and the end of the world, involving ten actors, two angels and a talking dog. Babette's Feast meets Repulsion in Hell". |
