Driven by a necessity to establish a relationship with his mother, a son comes to visit her. During the visit both characters are exposed to their need of a Mother and Child connection lacking in their lives, one of the primary human values so often ignored and substituted with seemingly important merits - freedom, career and comfort. The characters in Fosse's play recognise the need to connect with each other. Their ability to solve the problem is irrelevant. Their recognition of the problem and their attempt to find a solution is invaluable. The play is an exciting journey of two individuals trying to connect. It explores the darkest but also the sentimental and humorous paths of human behaviour, and the guilt and hope that help us to keep going. It is intense, profound and it is also funny. Mother and Child explores the difficulty for women of combining career and motherhood, thus placing the spotlight on both maternity leave and equal opportunity employment issues. |
